The Michigan State Historical Records Advisory Board, appointed by the governor, serves as a central advisory body for historical records planning and for National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC)-funded projects in the state.

The board facilitates cooperation and communication among historical records repositories and information agencies within the state. The board also serves as a state-level review body for NHPRC grant proposals.

Mission

To improve awareness of and access to Michigan’s historic records.

Strategic Plan

Public Awareness

The MSHRAB is committed to raising awareness of the important historical records held by Michigan institutions and organizations. The board will be a resource that helps organizations around the state foster awareness of and promote access to historical records. The board will:

  • Define and publicize the role of the MSHRAB at conferences and through press opportunities.
  • Maintain a web presence to disseminate information useful to Michigan organizations.

Alliances

Through alliances with interest groups and organizations the MSHRAB can leverage opportunities for records custodians in Michigan. Alliances will increase statewide communication on records issues and opportunities. The board will:

  • Coordinate information sharing with various Michigan interest groups and with regional organizations when appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain a presence at local conferences (MAA, HSM and subgroups where relevant).

Grants

The MSHRAB will facilitate communication about grants available to Michigan institutions through its online presence and press opportunities. The board is available to review and advise on various grant proposals in order to help archives build successful applications.  The board will:

  • Promote local and federal grant opportunities through press releases, conferences, the MSHRAB web page and social media in order to improve access to collections.
  • Promote and highlight successful grants and publish case studies/blogs.
  • Solicit drafts of NHPRC grants for review and advice.
  • Apply for NHPRC Board Partnership grants.

Advocacy (Save Michigan History campaign)

It is important to provide effective and consistent advocacy to remind organizations and funders of the value of preservation and access to Michigan’s archival records housed in various repositories throughout the state.  The board will:

  • Communicate board priorities with legislators.
  • Create awareness and interest in historical records.
  • Promote the role of archives to various interest groups.

Education

The MSHRAB will strive to meet the education needs of multiple audiences.  Efforts will focus on the key elements of access, preservation, and awareness.  Specific attention will be paid to resource development, emergency planning, preservation as part of holdings maintenance, promotion and access issues and format awareness or obsolescence.  The board will:

  • Provide FEMA/CoSA prep card templates for emergency planning.
  • Create online tutorials for record keeping best practices.
  • Provide electronic records preservation information and education.
  • Provide architectural records collection guidelines.
  • Provide links to existing archival education resources.

  1. Thanks for your patience. The site has been updated. We still need to add some collections care resources and a grant profile. We are working on completing this by the end of the week. Thanks!
